Danny McDonald
"If the true essence of an Aussie Summer could be captured forever in time, this ('Summer City') would be it"
Whammo Website (AUSTRALIA), July 2003
After 15 years of relentless touring to almost every corner of Australia & more than 15 CD / vinyl releases to his name, Danny McDonald has earned a reputation of one of Australia's most respected Power Pop artists.
Operating under numerous guises over the years including the very successful "P76" and highly regarded "Jericho", Danny has also appeared as a founding member of Aussie Garage-Rock recording outfit "The Stoneage Hearts" and toured with commercially renowned pop band "Oscarlima". These days, Danny records and tours under his own name.
Taking inspiration from Aussie songwriting legends such as Dom Mariani, Paul Kelly, Mick Thomas, and Tim Rogers, Danny combines individual & unmistakably Australian lyricism with his own unique take on classic melodic guitar pop.
Danny's third solo album "Fibrotones" follows on from his previous releases "Into The Sun" and "Summer City", showing Danny taking yet another step forward in the songwriting realm - combining traditional Rock & Roll with Power Pop, 60's Surf and Indie Pop, & coming out swinging with an unpretentious & timeless body of work capturing the Australian condition and 70's Australian Surf culture like no other. "Fibrotones" features special guests such as Paul Thomas of (Weddings Parties Anything, Huxton Creepers, Custard) Mickster (The Crusaders, Finkers & Pyramidiacs) and Tim Mills (P76), and clearly displays an artist very much in control of his own identity.
P76
"P76" was a pseudonym under which Australian singer / songwriter Danny McDonald operated under between 1998 and 2002. Formed immediately after the demise of Danny's previous outfit "Jericho", P76 achieved a great deal of success both in Australia and abroad in it's 4 year life-span.
Danny issued the first P76 release in 1999, in the form of a CD-EP entitled "…Life In General". Limited to 500 copies, the EP sold out very quickly, but not before attracting the attention of national Australian radio and numerous labels from various corners of the world.
Danny singed his "P76" project to the prestigious USA pop label "Zip Records" in 2001 and issued an EP entitled "Sunliner', which further elevated the P76 profile - Again within Australia, whilst equally wooing the critics & fans alike among the world-wide Power pop community.
Produced by Perth power Pop legend Dom Mariani (The Stems, DM3, The Someloves), the debut full-length P76 album "Into The Sun" was issued in October 2001, to instant acclaim all over the world. Regarded as one of the world's very finest albums of it's genre for 2001, "Into The Sun" went on to sell a very respectable quantity of copies, and is now widely regarded as a seminal Australian classic of it's genre. 'Into The Sun' produced the well-known Australian radio singles "Sleeping In" and "Me & Her, The Road & Our EJ". The former single not only receiving official rotation on Australia's JJJ radio network, but also heavy commercial support from Melbourne's Nova 100 and Australia's Austereo network.
After 4 years of constant Australian touring and leaving behind a genuinely classic Australian record, Danny abandoned the "P76" guise in 2002, and has gone on to receive further worldwide acclaim for subsequent releases under his own name.
Jericho
Formed in the regional Victorian area of LaTrobe Valley sometime in the early 90's, Jericho was the first recording outfit for one of Australia's finest & most respected Power Pop solo singer / songwriters, Danny McDonald (P76 / The Stoneage Hearts / Oscarlima).
Although they existed at a time when America's "Grunge" explosion had consumed the large majority of Australia's original music scene, Jericho sported a unique take on the country's rich heritage of classic guitar based Power Pop, recalling the likes of The Sunnyboys, The Hoodoo Gurus, The Stems, and Paul Kelly.
Relentless & extensive touring up & down Australia's East Coast, supported by 4 classic & now highly collectable EP releases earned Jericho a reputation that has survived and consistently grown to this very day.
Following on from strong local and global acclaim for Danny McDonald's recent solo and P76 releases, Melbourne label Popboomerang Records released a posthumous Retrospective album by the band in 2003, containing Jericho's finest moments (previously released and unreleased). Packaged in a finely crafted & complete package, Jericho's Retrospective album set the record straight for a band who sadly never achieved the larger recognition they deserved, placing them comfortably respected in Australia's rich underground Rock & Roll history.
